Hello – I’m Charity! I’m a wife and mama, an educator, and a story lover.

“The blessing of the Lord be upon you” Psalm 129:8a

Faith

I’m a born again (Bible believing and practicing) Christian. I believe that our faith is not just something that should impact our lives on Sunday morning at church. The way we see the world, the way we interact with others, and the way we choose to conduct ourselves should all be influenced by God’s power and presence in us. A truly healthy family is only possible when it is pursuing godliness.

Family

I’ve been married to my college sweetheart Ben for 17 years, and I’m a mama to four energetic children. We had four babies in six years (I was pregnant with three of them during my doctoral program), and their names all begin with the letter E! We live in the Ozarks and fill our free time with books, hikes, live theater, potlucks with friends, and visits to grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins.

I’m an English Professor at College of the Ozarks where I’ve taught for 13 years. I have a PhD in literature and criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Up to this point, I have mostly written academically, but the Lord has prodded me to also branch out to connect with women outside of academia. Despite our various interests and areas of expertise, there is so much we share in common as women!

The WHY Behind All of This:

When I became a mom, I agonized over my decision to continue working. I didn’t want to climb to the highest rank on the career ladder and shatter the glass ceiling, but I knew I had giftings and talents I wanted to share with my community. I also desired to be the best mama I could be – I didn’t want to just get by or go on auto-pilot. I felt torn between my desire to parent intentionally with excellence and also to do well in the workplace and honor my employer. I have grappled with mom guilt and feeling like I am teetering between two worlds, but I have found grace and freedom in the choices that the Lord allows us to make when we put Him at the center of it all. Working while raising a family is not for everyone, and each woman should prayerfully consider the choice that is right for her family. But examples from Scripture such as the Proverbs 31 woman show that it is possible to be a successful working homemaker IF our family is prioritized and IF we recognize our ultimate identity is neither worker nor homemaker but Child of God. All other titles must rank underneath our ultimate calling “to glorify God and enjoy him forever.”

A little more about me

I’m an introvert who loves being around people and doing activities as long as I get the chance to recharge.

I like browsing and shopping at thrift stores and flea markets – I love vintage and old, pretty things.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks and podcasts and when it comes to tv shows, I love BBC or a good PBS masterpiece series!
